Unbearable heat? Architect Antonio Matres shares simple, aesthetic, and totally free tricks to keep your home cool:
Cross ventilation + fans
Open windows facing each other to create natural air currents. This allows accumulated heat to dissipate without the need for appliances.
Strategically place fans: one to extract hot air and another to bring in fresh air from outside.
Immediate refreshment with water
Wet a cold towel and place it in front of the fan: the evaporating water cools the air around the towel.
Quick alternative: lightly mist the room before bed to generate nighttime coolness.
Materials and atmosphere.
Turn off heat-generating appliances (halogen bulbs, routers, etc.): reducing the “invisible temperature” helps a lot.
Use natural textiles: linen curtains and furniture, unvarnished wood, and add vegetation to improve comfort.
