Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja (about 10 km from Orihuela Costa)

The park is located in a Quaternary basin formed by the reliefs corresponding to the lower Segura fault group. There are two main lagoons, that of Torrevieja, of 1,400 hectares with a main axis of 5,500 meters and that of La Mata, located one and a half kilometers northeast of the previous one with a surface area of ​​700 hectares, into which a network of ravines and ramblas coming from the nearby mountain range of San Miguel de Salinas.

The two lagoons are separated by the Chaparral, an anticline, and are artificially connected to the sea by a channel known as the Acequión, which was built for the exploitation of the Torrevieja salt flats that have been in operation since the 13th century.
